SERIES DESCRIPTION

This sermon begins our journey through the Gospel of Mark. Mark’s approach was to record specific conversations and events from Jesus’s life to create a picture like a collage. He wanted to provide enough evidence from episodes of Jesus’ life to help people understand the real Jesus, and that he was the Messiah.

In Mark 6:14-29, we see Herod was close in proximity to Jesus yet remained distant in his heart because he was unwilling to surrender to Jesus. Sin promised Herod everything but only delivered inner turmoil. Jesus offers abundant, eternal, and joy-filled life to anyone who will surrender to Him.

In Mark 6:30-44, Jesus looked at the huge crowd and as the Good Shepherd, He saw they were like harassed sheep. They were anxious, afraid, discontent, lonely, confused, and heartbroken. Through his teaching, He showed them that heart satisfaction is only possible when a person receives the Gospel.

In the last part of Mark 6, Jesus walked on water and showed the disciples a side of Him they had not yet experienced. He did this to show His glory, character, and nature are no longer far off. He has brought them near to us.

In Mark 7, Jesus addressed a universal question of humanity – “what truly removes a person’s guilt?” In His interaction with the Pharisees, Jesus said nothing they do will ever work because it doesn’t change a person’s heart. The only way to remove guilt is to let Jesus take it away.

In Mark 8:1-21, the disciples are confused. Their lack of understanding revealed a problem in their hearts. The disciples had it, the Pharisees had it, and we have it. The heart of every human has sin growing within and the only way to deal with it is to repent and believe the Good News.

In Mark 8:22-31, Jesus restores sight to a blind man as an object lesson to the disciples. The lesson is that we are all spiritually blind and our blindness clears in stages. As Jesus works in our hearts, we see Him more clearly for who He is and what He offers us.

In Mark 8:33, Jesus rebukes Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” What Jesus is saying is when we think, see, and act in contradiction to Gods design we are aligning ourselves with Satan. Instead, we must focus on making Jesus the king of our world and our hearts.

We now begin Act 3 with Mark Chapter 9. The transfiguration of Jesus confirms that, despite looking like a normal man, Jesus is in essence fully God. This experience stands apart from miracles and healings and is more than His teachings. This is the glory and splendor of God being revealed.

What happens after Jesus’ transfiguration is a beautiful demonstration of His inner character. Jesus loves people enough to slow down, look them in the eye, and listen. He shows compassion for hurting people and that He isn’t too busy or famous to give us His attention and love.

The disciples didn’t understand how to follow a crucified and resurrected King. Jesus teaches that to follow Him, we must sacrifice our pride to serve others and sever our sins.

A wealthy man approaches Jesus to ask him how to enter the kingdom of God. Jesus tells him and the disciples it would be easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.

In Mark 10:32-52, Jesus isn’t done shocking the disciples with an impossible expectation. He has one more lesson to teach on Kingdom of God living: He teaches them how a person leads and influences by putting the needs of others first.

In Mark 11:1-11, Jesus enters Jerusalem on a donkey. Jesus is mighty and powerful; He is God! He could have chosen any way to enter as a king yet, he humbly moves toward the cross, riding an animal the world thought to be unworthy of a king.

Jesus is the King of Kings, therefore, also has full authority to judge us. During his life here, he enacted his judgement on others to cleanse them. We all are at fault of sin and deserve judgement, however, Jesus took on that burden when he died on the cross.

In Mark 11:20-26, Jesus teaches the disciples about the power of faith and prayer. When we have faith in God, we experience the Fruits of the Spirit and a life filled with expectant supernatural prayer.
